My Smoky Mountain Vacations

It looks like this forum is fairly inactive but I'm crossing my fingers. I'm from Indiana which many know its pretty FLAT. I'm about to drive down to Gatlinburg and I'm a little intimidated. I know what to do and not to do when driving in the mountains (theoretically) I've just never been the driver. I've been to Gatlinburg a few times as a teenager with a family that goes annually so it was hardly a learning experience but rather time to play with my friend. Now I'm about to venture down and I'm nervous about getting lost... driving up an extra mountain or two just because I didn't read my map well wouldn't be pleasant. Does anyone know how well GPS systems fair down there? VZ Navigator for Verizon cell phones or Garmin and TomTom? I don't really want to drop any extra money for a navigation system but I'd rather not get turned around and waste what little time I will have there to enjoy everything. Thanks!
