Dollywood Season Pass Holder August Incentives

August 9

We took the kiddos to Dollywood for the last time before school started (on the 11th). We weren't the only family in the area with the same idea. Apparently lots season pass holders wanted to get in one last summer trip to Dollywood as well as take advantage of the great deals the 'Wood is offering in the month of August. The best deal for our family involves free food for kids. If you eat at Red's Diner , Miss Lillian's, Aunt Granny's , the Grandstand Cafe , or Splinter's and show your season pass, you get one free child's meal for each adult meal you purchase (you must also buy a drink for the adult). You can still use your Gold pass  to get 20% off the total meal cost as well. When our final bill was calculated  our family of five ate at Red's Diner for about $17 - the same as a typical fast food restaurant for us. Dollywood is also offering other incentives to season pass holders in August - every season pass holder is automatically entered into a drawing for a year's supply of free gasoline every time you visit Dollywood in August. Also, every merchandise purchase you make with your season pass in August gives you an automatic entry into a drawing for one of two $500 shopping sprees. That one doesn't excite me as much, though, since I rarely buy anything at Dollywood.

Dollywood was pretty packed this past Saturday, but I expect it to be much less crowded from here on out in August - except maybe on Saturdays when all the local season pass holders visit. Timber Tower was not operating - again. It seems that particular ride is broken almost as much as it is operational. I discovered at least part of the problem this past time, though. Apparently the ride was built in Germany and parts for it must also be shipped from Germany. So when a part needs to be replaced it takes several days to get it.

We watched the Dreamland Drive-In show for the second time this season. That show seems to get better every time I watch it. I especially love Bertha - she has a great  voice as well as incredible stage presence. If you get a chance to see Dreamland Drive-In I highly recommend it. But you'll need to pay special attention to the show schedule when you visit. The show usually only runs twice a day at around 11 am and  1 pm - and I've never seen it play on Tuesdays or Thursdays. You shouldn't  have any problem getting a good seat if you arrive about 15 minutes before the show is scheduled to start - unless it's an especially busy day.

All in all we had a great visit to Dollywood. I'll let you know about our next adventure in the Smokies soon.

Zambian Vocal Group at Dollywood

April 19

I visited Dollywood last weekend for the express purpose of listening to the Zambian Vocal Group one more time before the Festival of Nations at Dollywood ends. Dollywood has a great variety of very talented musicians and artists at the Festival of Nations this year, but my favorite by far is the Zambian Vocal Group.

From my understanding the men who sing in the group met as orphans and are from several different tribes in Zambia. The group was formed with the guidance of a missionary to Zambia and today the group performs to raise money for a school in Zambia. The children who attend the school are all orphans as well, and the school receives no funding except what is raised by the Zambian Vocal Group as well as private donations.

The Zambian Vocal Group sings a variety of Christian hymns as well as songs in several languages native to Zambia. They sing a capella and their harmonies and rhythms in several of the songs are amazing. Each concert is different since they choose the songs from a repertoire of about 700 songs. If you have a chance to visit Dollywood before the Festival of Nations ends I encourage you to plan time in your schedule to listen to this group. Dollywood Opening Day - Part 2

Dollywood Opening Day - Part 2

After a busy week last week I'm finally able to return to my blog and finish my first Dollywood report of the season.

As I hinted before, the River Battle ride wasn't in perfect working condition when we rode it. The water guns on almost every boat but ours worked great, allowing other riders to pelt our boat with water. This wouldn't have been a problem except the temperature was a moderate 70-something degrees. Oh, well. At least we were able to experience Dollwood's newest attraction - and it was lots of fun. Even if you choose not to ride you can still participate from the walkway around the ride - riders can soak you and you can man a water gun and soak people on the boats. And the best part of this new area is that Timber Canyon (with Mystery Mine, Thunderhead, and Timber Tower), is now linked with Craftsman's Valley creating a continuous loop through Dollywood. I always dreaded making the long walk to either Timber Canyon area or the Blazing Fury since both were so far from the rest of the attractions in the park.

After testing out the new ride, we watched Ireland's River of the Dance show in the Celebrity Theater. The show was incredible (albeit similar to last year's version), but I noticed that several families with young children got up to leave part way through the show. Since there was no story line (just dancing and singing) it appeared that many younger children were not as captivated as the adults. In a few months though Kidsfest will begin with more kid-friendly shows.

Other changes I noticed from last year:

The magician that has been at the exit to the train for the past few decades appears to have retired. I don't know any details but the magician's shop that he ran is no longer there (no sign was up, however, to indicate what might be going in the old magician's shop) and his sign was not up at the little outdoor theater where he has always performed. I'll post more information as I get it.

Food prices appear to have gone up slightly. That's no great surprise since food prices have increased everywhere due to higher gas prices.

The big butterfly in the flower bed at the entrance to the park is gone. I'm not sure why, since lots of people used it as a photo op.

Plenty of new parking has been added to go along with the new single entrance off Volunteer Boulevard. There are enough parking attendant booths that hopefully huge traffic jams entering the parking lot will be avoided. I'll update on that when the season gets a bit busier. There were no traffic problems entering Dollywood when we went in March.

Cades Cove In Spring

Tuesday, March 18
Cades Cove

Since it was a beautiful almost-spring day and the kids were out of school for spring break, we decided to make our first trek of the season to Cades Cove. I assumed that since we were visiting in the middle of the week that we wouldn't see too many other visitors. Wrong! I believe the nice weather we're experiencing (with highs near 70 degrees) enticed quite a few people to the Smokies this week.

Opening Day at Dollywood

Although Dollywood's 2008 season has not officially started (that happens with the Dolly Parton parade in Pigeon Forge in April), the park has opened its gates for "pre-season" visitors. The weather was beautiful so we couldn't resist visiting Dollywood on opening day.
