Camping at the former Little River Village Campground, now Townsend Great Smokies KOA, is an excellent way to really get back to nature on your next Smoky Mountain vacation.
As avid campers, my family and I enjoy camping in the Smoky Mountain
area. The former Little River Village Campground, now Townsend Great
Smokies KOA, was the first campground we visited in Townsend. It
offers the typical campground amenities, but with the added benefit of
being less than half a mile from the Great Smoky Mountains National
Park. The full hook-up and water/electric sites are somewhat close
together, but most are tree-covered which helps maintain privacy. The
tent-camping area is a short walk from the rest of the sites and is in
the woods, with plenty of room between sites. In both the tent camping
and full hook-up areas there are sites along the river (which are my
favorites).
As far as amenities go, Little River Village has everything you would
expect in a campground. The playground equipment is newer and the
playground is covered in pea gravel. The swimming pool is
well-maintained with lounge chairs and covered tables in the pool area.
There is a covered picnic pavilion for groups (but be sure to request
the pavilion in advance).
The best part of Little River Village Campground is its location at
the Townsend entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. You
can rent tubes at the campground or at any of several other rental
stands in Townsend, and if you are visiting in the summer I highly
suggest you do so. One of the most relaxing things you will do on
vacation is to ride a tube down a river in the Smokies. If you don't
have access to two vehicles (or someone who is willing to drive you
upstream and drop you off) you should use a tube rental company that
offers free drop-off service upstream so you don't have to hike to your
car when you are finished tubing. Also remember that the water in the
river is cold, so choose a hot day for your tubing adventure.
Little River Village Campground is a great home base for a Smokies
vacation focused on the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, especially
if you want to avoid the larger crowds in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg.
