Top Five Free Things To Do in the Smokies

Published in : Attractions , Attractions and Activities

A vacation to Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains doesn't have to be expensive. Inside this article I have outlined five activities that are fun, entertaining and best of all, cost nothing! And for more tips on how to have a memorable vacation without breaking the bank, visit my Budget Smoky Mountain Vacation Ideas .

1. Go swimming in a mountain stream. There's not a more invigorating experience than spending the afternoon in a cool mountain stream. Rock-hopping is also lots of fun and easy to do since most of the rivers and streams in the Smokies have plenty of rocks to hop on. Just be sure to bring a change of clothes if you aren't wearing a swimsuit, because the rocks can be slippery.

2.  Geocaching . Well, this one is only free if you already have access to a GPS system. There are plenty of hidden caches in Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and the Smoky Mountains. In fact, this one could keep you busy for several days. Visit my article on geocaching in the Smokies for more information and a link to known geocache stashes in the Smokies.

3.  Go on a hike. This one may seem pretty obvious, but it's surprising how many visitors to the Smokies don't take advantage of the hundreds of miles of trails in the National Park . There are trails of all lengths and difficulties - from short, easy walks to strenuous all-day hikes.

4.  Visit  Cades Cove Loop in the morning or evening.  Why morning or evening? Because that's when deer, bears, raccoons, and other wildlife are most active. As an added bonus, the car traffic is lighter then. If you visit in the evening make sure you arrive before sunset since the loop is closed to automobile traffic after dusk.

5.  Tour the Great Smoky Arts and Crafts Community. The Great Smoky Mountains have a rich tradition of hand-made arts and crafts. Many of the artisans and crafters in the arts and crafts community create their products on-site or offer on-site demonstrations to visitors. And most of the crafters are very open to answering questions about their crafts. You can recieve a free lesson in Smoky Mountain arts and crafts and find a unique souvenir at the same time.
