Any visit to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park should begin with a visit to the Sugarlands Visitor Center. Located just inside the Gatlinburg entrance to the park, Sugarlands has a number of invaluable resources for planning your visit to the park.
At Sugarlands you'll find natural history exhibits on wildlife and plants found in the Smokies. There is also a free 20 minute film about the park which runs several times throughout the day. Sugarlands is staffed by knowledgeable park employees who are happy to answer questions and share information about the history of the Smokies.
Between mid-March and early November there are daily ranger-led programs conducted at Sugarlands. Topics vary but have included information on black bears, an overview of the park and flora and fauna of the Smokies. Check back here for updated information on specific talks and times. I will be posting the information as soon as I receive it.
Inside the visitor center you will also find a bookstore and shop. Many of the books and other materials offered are both informative and difficult to find elsewhere.
Other services at Sugarlands include public restrooms, water fountain, drink machines, back country permit purchase center and telephones.
